How a resin coaster is poured

Resin, pigment, real sand and a lot of patience: what goes into one set of ocean coasters.

Every set of coasters starts on a Sunday, when the studio is quiet and the resin has a full day to cure.

Mixing the colour

The base resin is clear. We add pigment a drop at a time, stirring slowly so no air gets trapped. Too fast and you get bubbles; too slow and the resin starts to set before it reaches the mould.

The pour

  • The first layer is the sea: three blues, poured one after the other.
  • A thin white line for the foam, dragged with a toothpick.
  • The sand layer last, with real sand from Dumas beach.
The trick is to stop touching it. Resin finds its own level if you let it.

After 24 hours the coasters come out of the mould. The edges are sanded, the tops polished, and each set is checked against the light. See the finished coasters.
